DBT Skills Training Module: Emotion Regulation
There are times that the nervous system fires off signals as if there is danger, when in fact, there is no real threat. This can happen when it is responding to worries, anxious thoughts, and fears that come along with uncertain situations. When you notice this occurring, try to regulate emotions by identifying facts of the matter. Make the decision to respond only to facts, what you know for sure, rather than opinions and interpretations. When you have evidence for further concern, address it at that time. Until then, practice Check the Facts to reserve intense emotional responses for when they are actually needed to keep you safe.
