Troubleshoot Emotion Regulation

DBT Skills Training Module: Emotion Regulation

The DBT skill Troubleshoot Emotion Regulation encourages flexibility and persistence when managing intense emotions. Not every skill will work perfectly in every situation, and that’s okay. This skill involves practicing willingness to alternate between different strategies if one isn’t as effective in the moment. For example, if distraction doesn’t help, you might try self-soothing, grounding exercises, or problem-solving instead. Keeping a positive mindset as you explore and apply different tools is key to maintaining hope and resilience. The process of troubleshooting allows you to fine-tune your approach, building a stronger understanding of what works best for you in different emotional states.

Having a plan in place is essential, especially if your emotional conditions don’t change right away. Troubleshooting includes creating strategies to keep yourself safe and grounded, such as reaching out to a trusted support person, engaging in calming routines, or seeking professional help if needed. By focusing on the next best step, you take control of what you can in the moment, prioritizing self-care and emotional safety. This approach reduces frustration and builds confidence, showing you that even in the face of intense emotions, you have the tools and resilience to navigate your way forward.
